What’s the difference between footing and foundation?
A footing is a reinforced concrete structure placed beneath a foundation to distribute building loads evenly into the ground, typically located below the frost line for long-term stability. The foundation, on the other hand, is built on top of the footing and supports walls or slabs directly. It provides structural integrity, moisture protection, and may include waterproofing and drainage features.
How long does concrete need to cure before proceeding with construction?
While concrete can become walkable within 24 hours, achieving its full structural strength typically takes up to 28 days. For footings, we often wait 3–5 days, depending on weather and mix design. We always verify curing progress to meet code and ensure durability prior to continuing building work.
Do you handle permits and inspections in Toronto and the GTA?
Yes—we manage all necessary building permits and inspection scheduling in compliance with the City of Toronto and GTA municipalities. Our services also extend to coordinating utility locates and addressing right-of-way (ROW) or municipal road use permits, ensuring a seamless and compliant process every step of the way.
How do seasonal changes affect footing and slab work in Ontario?
Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles and variable soil conditions require specialized concrete mixes—typically air-entrained with at least 32 MPa strength, controlled slump, and added air content for resilience. We use tailored mixes and, in colder months, may include additives, heated water, insulated curing, and extended cure times to ensure quality.
What steps do you take to prevent drainage issues under slabs?
Proper drainage is critical to structural performance. We prepare slabs by compacting the subgrade, installing vapor barriers, and integrating control joints. All slabs are tied into perimeter or interior drainage systems designed to divert water away from the structure—not just the surface—protecting against moisture-related damage.
